Divorce Kits

In rough economic times, divorce can, for many reasons, be cost prohibitive. Couples may find that attorney's fees are too high and may worry about attorneys misleading them in regards to the actual work that needs to be done. Divorce kits are one solution to the dilemma of married couples too poor to afford a lawyer.

Divorce kits function like do-it-yourself divorces. For a small fee ranging from $20-$50, couples can obtain the divorce they desire without the aid of an expensive attorney. In some cases, the couple may also be able to avoid having to appear at court. Despite the convenience offered by these kits, they do have requirements for use. Couples still raising children will not be able to use divorce kits. They are also not suitable for couples who cannot agree on the division of assets or have at-fault grounds for divorce. Using these kits truly takes a large degree of cooperation in combination with the ownership of few assets. If a marriage meets the criteria, printable kits are available online and are also generally offered by the county court building. It is important to make sure the kit purchased adheres to state and county guidelines, otherwise it may prove to be a waste of time and money.

Even when a couple meets the criteria of divorce kits, some may find it easier to simply hire an attorney to handle the specifics of an uncontested divorce. This helps if the couple does have to appear before a judge. Attorneys can also connect divorcees to counselors and explain difficult to understand language used in a divorce filing. Not to mention, simple uncontested divorces are generally handled cheaply by lawyers, as they require much less work than the typical divorce.
